Five Things You Didn't Know about Chile

1. Crazy Flag Law

They have a weird law here that says houses cannot fly flags except for their Independence Day (September 18 and 19) and the 21st of May. You can get fined for flying a flag on any other day. And the companies are REQUIRED to fly a flag on Independence Day. Seeing as Independence Day is coming up, I am getting excited to see Chilean flags everywhere. :)

2. Chile's past dictator used to live around the corner

Pinochet was the President of Chile and ousted the Communists. He was under house arrest just down the street from my parent's house until his death almost 2 years ago.

3. Chilean drivers are absolutely 100% insane

I scream and gasp and yell "watch out!" and try to push my foot on an imaginary brake when I drive with my parents here. Seriously, the drivers do not know that the lines painted on the road designate lanes, and they freely float between them. There are no turn lanes, so cars just zip around or line up behind the car waiting to turn. I also think that Chileans believe the speed limit is actually a speed minimum. My dad goes at least 80 mph on the freeway right in the city. Yes, I consider my parents Chilean drivers. :)

4. Chile has everything from a desert to glaciers

Since Chile is such a long country running north to south, it has so many climates. In the north, we have the driest desert in the world, the Atacama Desert. In the middle of the country (where Santiago is-see picture above of our neighborhood) we have a California-type of climate. There are gorgeous snow-capped mountains, green hills and wild flowers growing in the valleys. Then in the south near the bottom of the world, haha, there are beautiful glaciers.

5. Laura is Chilean.

Yep, she was born here and has a Chilean passport.

first of all, umm, laura do you have a blog?
my favorite is that mom/dad are chilean drivers, and that you cracked yourself up when you said at the bottom of the world. plus laura being chilean, that's great too.

I remember the drivers in Guatamala were the same way....I think. It was a long time ago, but I just know they are crazy there too! Lots of slamming on the brake and serving. I wouldn't last long there. I'm the most paranoid driver ever. Laura looks chilean.
